2012 Aussie Millions Opening Event Results
January 22nd, 2012
The 2012 Aussie Millions kicked off last Thursday and is now well underway. The Opening Event is now complete and two more events have started in Melbourne, Australia. Lots of the world’s best players have showed up to Australia in order to take part in the festivities and it should be a great time for everyone down under. The weather has been extremely nice and many players that live in the Northern Hemisphere are glad to be escaping winter to visit Australia right now.
This year the 2012 Aussie Millions Opening Event had 946 poker players join and compete. The players that joined the tournament all paid the buy-in of $1100AUD and the winner was guaranteed a massive $200,000AUD plus a coveted gold ring. Everyone wants to win an Aussie Millions gold ring and they’ve become almost as coveted as WSOP bracelets. Winning a bracelet is actually a lot easier nowadays due to the number of bracelet tournaments hosted every year in Vegas for the WSOP.
Players were able to join the Opening Event on 3 different Day 1 starting days. It’s rare for a tournament to have so many starting days, but it worked out and allowed lots of players that were just arriving in Australia to join the tournament. After the 3 Day 1’s the tournament was supposed to be finished on Day 2 of the tournament. However, the tournament took longer than expected to play out and the final table had to be played out on Day 3 because they run out of time on Day 2 and everyone was exhausted.
Brendon Rubie ended up winning the 2012 Aussie Millions Opening Event after defeating a tough final table. Scott Wilson ended up finishing the event in 2nd place after losing heads-up against Rubie. Rubie started the heads-up action against Wilson with a 2:1 chip lead roughly and never looked back. At some points Wilson was able to make a bit of a run, but Rubie was able to seal the deal and win the 2012 Aussie Millions Opening Event.
Rubie sealed the deal in the tournament in a big hand where Rubie hit two pairs. Both players ended up all-in and Rubie thought he had won the tournament after winning the hand, but it turned out Wilson still had some chips. Nothing is worse than celebrating a victory prematurely, but Rubie did apologize to Wilson for the mistake. Wilson was able to win a couple small all-in hands after losing the big hand against Rubie, but after a few hands he was eliminated in 2nd place.
