Russia’s Igor Kurganov Signs with PokerStars

Igor Kurganov, a Russian poker tournament specialist, has just signed a deal to represent PokerStars. At age 28, he’s one of the youngest members of Team PokerStars.

Early in his career, Kurganov had dreamed of being sponsored by a major online poker site. But the deal never came, so he just focused on improving his skills. The results have been great, with the Saint Petersburg native having amassed over $12 million in his career.

This helped him gain the attention of Stars, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s dating fellow Team PokerStars member Liv Boeree, who’s been with the site since September 2010.

The couple started Raising for Effective Giving, a charitable organization that raises money for community projects in developing countries. Despite all he’s done in the poker world and beyond, Kurganov was a little surprised when he got the call from Stars.

“I was kind of surprised when they contacted me,” he said. “They suggested that I’d come to the offices, meet the people that work there and that I’d have the opportunity to give feedback. On top of that, PokerStars was interested in supporting REG as well, which is great.”

Now set to earn a substantial sum from his contract with PokerStars, Kurganov would like to give a “significant portion” of it to REG. Considering that he made over $2.3 million last year in live tournaments, Kurganov can safely afford to give to charity.

PokerStars commented on the new addition to their team, citing the influence that Kurganov can have in Russia and other European countries.

“As an outspoken advocate for online and live poker players,” said Eric Hollreiser, Vice President of Corporate Communications,” he’ll contribute to our products, our policies and our promotion of live and online poker in Russia, Germany and serve as a global ambassador for poker as a member of Team Pro.”
