Juan Carlos “El Matador” Mortensen is an outstanding professional poker player who only started playing poker on a regular basis in 1997 in Spain, where he was then living. After Mortensen became unbeatable in local games, he moved to the United States in the late 1990s.

In February 2001, he won the $300 Limit Hold’em event at the L.A. Poker Classic. Less than a month later, he won the $1,000 No-Limit event at the 2001 Bay 101 Shooting Stars tournament. This earned him a ticket to the 2001 World Series of Poker Main Event.

Three months later, Mortensen won the 2001 Main Event and the cash prize of $1,500,000 after an eight-hour marathon final table.

Mortensen won his second gold bracelet in the $5,000 Limit Hold’em event at the 2003 WSOP.

In 2004, Mortensen won the World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship. Carlos Mortensen is on of only two professional poker players who have won both a WSOP Main Event and a WPT Title. The other is Doyse Brunson.

At the 2006 World Series of Poker, Mortensen made 3 final tables. He finished 9th in event #2, 9th in event #6, and 2nd in event #33, just missing his third bracelet.

Mortensen has also won two back to back “Sunday Million” tournaments on Pokerstars.

As of 2006, Mortensen’s has 2 WSOP bracelets and over $4,370,000 in live tournament winnings.
